Description
The dark
pond water
in the early evening
autumn has shadows
that descend
into a pleated flex
of time, its waves in cadence
measures ever so soft,
yet large.
The surface flowers have drowned,
starworts, bluebells, swamp roses,
although the buttonbush has
half its weight matted still
in the western black
deep end
beneath
my favorite willow
tree - the spider and crane fly
killing queen
looks comfortable
in her post-summer plumage,
her long, thin leaves
trickling the water
like fingertips dipping,
spinning the water
into a cauldron rippling ..
It's beautiful
to the sentimental
dreaming
an enigmatic cove
of discovery sinks
deep beneath
the dark water to another,
as the folds and crinkles
of plant life and fish,
turtles and snakes
layer the pond
like a bottomless cave.
